ABOUT THE RFID CONSORTIUM

Why was the RFID Consortium formed?
The RFID Consortium provides end users and manufacturers with access to patents that are essential for RFID product interoperability in the supply chain while offering an efficient licensing approach for holders of those patents.

What does the RFID Consortium offer today?
Through Sisvel, the Consortium offers an efficient single portfolio license to essential UHF RFID patents held by each member company. The Consortium also offers all interested holders of essential UHF RFID patent rights the opportunity to participate in this UHF RFID licensing program. This is the beginning of a process that could, and should, lead to a valuable and beneficial entity being created.

Who are the members of the RFID Consortium?
The RFID Consortium members include:

  • 3M Innovative Properties Co.
  • ETRI
  • France Telecom
  • HP
  • LG Electronic
  • Motorola (Symbol)
  • ThingMagic LLC
  • Zebra Technologies

What patents can be submitted for evaluation?
A party may submit for evaluation any patent(s) it owns (or has right to license) that it believes in good faith to be an essential UHF RFID patent(s). An Essential Patent is any patent that is either necessarily infringed or as to which a license is necessary as a practical matter because there are no economically viable substitutes to make, use, or sell a product in compliance with the UHF RFID standard.

Who determines if a submitted patent is essential?
Patents are reviewed for essentiality by an independent Patent Evaluator, working under an engagement letter directly with the submitting party. All exchanges between the submitting party and the evaluator are kept confidential, and the submitting party pays the evaluator’s fees under the terms of the engagement letter.
